Today, more innocent lives were lost when Russian militants shot down another Malaysian commercial plane. Innocent because many of the victims were not even aware of the conflict in the area. Ukraine is a common "air corridor" linking Europe and Asia. They just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Or were they?
As the cold war drawn to its conclusion, the free World has loosen its guard against the common enemy. Yet, dictatorships still exist, they just don't call themselves communist. Among those evil empires, China and Russia are on the top of the list. Armed with advanced weaponry, their abilities to radiate evils are far more superior than the former USSR. Like reactor meltdown, the lack of containment by the United States and Allies threaten the lives of freedom loving peoples living nearby. South Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, Hongkongers, Filipino's, and Vietnamese all live under this Sino's-fear. Russia is slowly extending his claws onto the former client states in central Asia and eastern Europe. Too many peoples live in the shadow of empires.
Our inaction has a price, those 295 passengers paid theirs today. Over the years, we have grown too comfortable in labeling overseas conflicts as "their problems". We sit back while small democracies being bullied. We revert back to pre-WWII mentalities. However, the World is much smaller today. We can no longer isolate ourselves to this continent. Our shores can no longer protect us from the troubles of the World. Imagine how the World would be if American has "tolerated" the bombing of Pearl harbor as an "offshore problem"?
The World today to very interconnected. Flight takes off from Holland, over a dozen sovereign states to reach Malaysia. Ukraine happens to be one of those sovereign states living along side with a strong empire. Only an insane nation would shoot down a civilian flight when it is struggling to get international support. The risk is too high even for reverse psychology. There are no doubt - Russia shot the plane down. She has done it in 1983, she is just doing it again.
Okay, how are all these related to my Hongkongers? Since the British discovery, Hongkong has always been the hub for international trades and travels. In 2013, Hongkong International Airport ranked 11th busiest by passengers and the most busiest by cargo traffic. Many more flights fly by HKIA controlled airspace, Malaysia 370 was one of those.
Support a strong and independent Hongkong against the influence of China. Don't let what happened today in Ukraine happens in Hongkong. Save democratic Hongkong and we all will travel safe.
